Undergraduate work was done at Caribbean Nazarene College and postgraduate work was completed at Howard University School of Divinity where Oliver was awarded the Master of Divinity degree. He was the recipient of the Vernon Johns Preaching Award which is given to the graduating student whose preaching best exemplifies the social and prophetic preaching of Vernon Johns, the predecessor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., at the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church. Phillips went on to complete his doctoral studies at the International Bible College and Seminary, graduating with the Doctor of Ministry degree in Social Ministries, and was the recent recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Leadership Award from the Reed Institute for the Advanced Study of Leadership at Olivet Nazarene University.
A devout student of preaching, Phillips is sought after to speak at revivals, workshops, faith promises, community transformation initiatives, compassionate ministry events, and cultural intelligence consultations. Rev. Phillips is certified to facilitate Cultural Intelligence Enhancement Seminars, and through teaching and conducting seminars he has traveled to Antigua, Barbados, British Isles, Cape Verde, Costa Rica, Ethiopia, France, Guyana, Hawaii, Holland, Jamaica, Kenya, the Philippines, and Spain.
PUBLICATION AND MEDIA EXPOSURE
Phillips has authored his autobiography, “The God of a Second Chance”, as well as four booklets, “Starting Strong Churches in the Black Community”, “The 12 Step Program: Steps to Starting a Compassionate Ministry Center”, “Who Moved My Church?” and “The Urban Imperative.” Oliver is the co-author of “Katrina: Friends, Family, & Faith”, and “How to Sponsor and Nurture an Ethnic Church – Without Losing Your Mind”. Phillips edited “E Pluribus Unum: Challenges and Opportunities in Multicultural Ministry”. He is the sole author of “The Power of One – A Sermonic Sojourn into a Pluralist World”, “Culture Trumps Religion, Every Time: The Ethno-Cultural Challenge for the Church”, “Nuts & Bolts, Inc. – A Toolkit to Equip Congregations for Para-parochial Ministry”, and “The Elephant in the Room – Empowering Congregations to Embrace Our Multicultural World.”
