Huawei’s Meng Wanzhou makes first public appearance since return as telecoms giant sees revenue drop

Huawei Chief financial officer Meng Wanzhou has appeared at a press conference for the telecommunication giant’s annual report, her first public appearance since returning to China after being detained in Canada. The daughter of company founder and chief executive Ren Zhengfei, Meng was detained in Canada on a fraud charge. The incident escalated when Canadians Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor were arrested in China for espionage, in moves widely seen as a retaliatory measure. They were later released on the same day that Meng signed a deferred prosecution agreement with the US Justice Department. Meng’s return to the company came amid its worst annual sales performance, even as net profit increased by 76 per cent from a year ago.
