This project was not about beauty or trying to fit in. This project was about what society deems acceptable and ‘pretty’ around the world. I’ve travelled a lot. In 2019 I went to Japan with my mum and as eye opening as their culture was, I wasn’t able to shake the part of me that saw people’s fashion. From Lolita, streetwear to edgy gothic. To when I travelled to France and from my view, I was able to see different people all uniting with the same sense of fashion. They all fit somehow. These people were individual pieces in a puzzle that I just couldn’t quite place. Till I realised beauty. Some of us want to fit in. Some of us are forced to conform. Others just want to express themselves. So, this is my project, my project on beauty standards around the world.
Hi, I’m Tansy Elliott.
I never understood why thongs were acceptable in Australia but in different places they were frowned upon or even seen as disrespectful. During Ignite 2020 I have focused on figuring the beauty myth. I started day one with a positive attitude I had finally chosen a topic and I was excited. So I sat down. About 5 minutes in I was overwhelmed. Then it hit me I have to make something big on something I know nothing about. Then if I skip over a few stressful nights I finally reached a point of successful research. I pulled through and worked hard each day I tried to do half an hour of work just so that I would keep up. Needless to say, my half an hour a day worked. A little too well. I got to point where I felt so confident in myself that I started absent minded slacking off. Then cut to just before the holidays it dawned on me. I need to finish this. So, I knuckled down.
Today I am sitting back reflecting on a journey that has been filled with stress and pandemics. A project that adapted from a simple book to an eBook. To an eBook video? I guess I struggled understanding what I wanted because I wasn’t sure if it needed to be digital.
So, here is my video eBook. I hope you enjoy.
